Shatter the Glass Ceiling: Women Leadership in Procurement

05/17/2024

Do you know that 60% of CPOs has claimed that there are more women working in procurement? It is indeed an optimistic outlook, yet they only account for 25% of the members of procurement management committees and management teams – one or two levels below the executive committee.

From defying traditional gender norms to overcoming systemic barriers, their paths to the top realms of leadership positions are never easy. What can we do to make procurement a more equitable and rewarding profession for women?

In our recent LinkedIn live session, Dr Christina Ooi shares her thought-provoking insights on the indispensable presence of women in this landscape – from creative and strategic thinking in problem-solving to undergoing negotiations and building relationships with suppliers.

When more women are proactive in the scene, this will foster a myriad of perspectives, drive innovation, and ensure that they have access to opportunities.

What can firms do to encourage more women in taking up more influential positions in procurement?

As Christina highlighted, there needs to be a deep-rooted approach in promoting gender diversity – firms must look into this alongside top-down management and promote mentorship programmes in grooming young women to become aspiring leaders in the future!

As a woman yourself, how do you shatter the glass ceiling?

As procurement professionals, we must conduct risk management from all sides – suppliers, manufacturers, and different stakeholders. Engaging in conversations that dives into your company’s spends is imperative, but being brave and standing up whilst acknowledging the contributions of your male allies is crucial as well!
